Engineers at Purdue University's PUR-1 reactor have conducted the first U.S. experiments of their kind, testing advanced digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, remote monitoring, and autonomous control to enhance the safety, efficiency, and lifespan of next-generation nuclear reactors

The School of Nuclear Engineering held its annual Advisory Board meeting on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, bringing together key leaders in the nuclear engineering field. This pivotal meeting serves as a platform to discuss strategic initiatives that influence the future direction of the school.

The School of Nuclear Engineering and College of Engineering co-hosted Dr.Ronald Latanision, Neil Armstrong Distinguished Visiting Professor, for a lecture on April 16, 2025. It was sponsored by the School of Nuclear Engineering for the 2024–2025 academic year and The Edwardson School of Industrial Engineering for the 2023–2024 and 2025-2026 academic years. The event took place in Forney Hall of Chemical Engineering and focused on the evolving role of technology in society.

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Dr. Martin López de Bertodano, who died on February 26, 2025, at the age of 67.

The College of Engineering recognized faculty, lecturers, and other staff for outstanding dedication to teaching students in a Purdue Exponent ad on January 13, 2025. Among those recognized were Nuclear Engineering professors Dr. Stylianos Chatzidakis and Dr. Yunlin Xu.

A new Purdue University-led study prepared for the Indiana Office of Energy Development (IOED) explores the feasibility and potential impact of implementing small modular reactors (SMRs) in the state. It also outlines opportunities for Indiana to address key challenges with the deployment of this technology both within the state and nationwide.

Hany Abdel-Khalik, professor in the School of Nuclear Engineering, is co-organizing the Joint IAEA-ICTP Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Advancing Nuclear Engineering Technology: from Theory to Practice to be held March 10-14, 2025 in Trieste, Italy.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind., Dec 17, 2024— In a landmark initiative to explore advanced energy solutions, Purdue University's School of Nuclear Engineering has submitted an in-depth report on Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology to the Indiana Office of Energy Development (IOED).
