Edwin Tan | Mechanical Engineering
President and Co-Founder, Veo
Raised in a family with a bicycle manufacturing legacy, Edwin Tan's passion for engineering and transportation was cultivated from a young age. When he was earning his master's degree at Purdue, courses like product design (ME 553) taught him principles of how to become a successful innovator, and his research at the Convergence Design Lab demonstrated how to be user centric. Harnessing those skills, he co-founded the micromobility company Veo in West Lafayette in 2017. It was incubated through the Purdue Foundry, where the first prototype was developed. Veo now is one of the largest and fastest growing companies of its kind in North America, operating in 50+ cities across the country, including New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. In addition to Purdue, Veo partners with large colleges like Texas A&M and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and with prominent enterprise clients, including NASA and Genentech, to provide micromobility services on their corporate properties.
The company has raised $20 million+ from venture capital and strategic investors, achieving financial profitability. Tan, who serves as president, has scaled Veo to a workforce of more than 300 people across 15 states. The company has provided more than 40 million trips to 5 million+ customers.
Tan developed the industry's first swappable battery technology and the first seated scooter - the Cosmo. The fleet also includes Astro, the original standing scooter, Cosmo e-bike (throttle-assist), Apollo (two-seated throttle-assist e-bike), and Apollo Cargo e-bike. A three-wheeled scooter is currently in development and will be ideal for riders new to micromobility and those who prefer extra stability.
