Joseph Muth | Materials Engineering

CTO, Croft Labs

Runners are likely familiar with Nike franchises like the InfinityRN 4, Pegasus, and Vomero running shoes, all of which feature ReactX, a high-performance, sustainability-focused foam developed by Joseph Muth. Working as a materials innovator, Muth invented, cultivated, and launched the ReactX platform - at the time the largest program in Nike's Advanced Innovation Collective. He secured the underlying technology, built the technical program, and led a 50-person team across four countries - all during the height of COVID-19. In the program's first year on the market, it directly generated > $100 million in revenue. Muth was granted nine patents while at Nike, won the Creative Thought Leadership Award, and the whole ReactX team was recognized with a Nike Maxim Award.

In 2022, he was recruited to join a venture-backed startup, 3D Fortify, as the director of process engineering. Within 12 months, he was promoted twice, culminating in his role as chief technology officer. The company leverages digital manufacturing and a proprietary material suite to produce high-performance composite devices. In his time with Fortify, Muth's team commercially released the company's first two products, directly accounted for 50%+ of total revenue, closed $12 million of strategic funding, and became the only company funded by both Raytheon and Lockheed Martin.

In January 2025, Muth became the CTO at Croft Labs, a seed stage startup. The company is building landscape-altering energy storage systems and the commensurate applications to go with them. He leads all aspects of R&D, product execution, intellectual property development, and technical horizon planning, while spearheading Croft's partnership formation and integration with third-party original equipment manufacturers and government entities.
