Job Corner with Ms. Whelton, PE
This section is prepared for the newsletter by Ms. Margaret Whelton, PE. She is the SEE Manager of Industrial Experience. The responsibilities of this position include working with industry to secure internships, co-ops, and full-time job opportunities for students; developing real world senior design and research projects; and facilitating partnerships between industry and Sustainability Engineering and Environmental Engineering. She has twelve years of experience as a practicing environmental engineer prior to becoming part of SEE. She is a registered professional engineer in Indiana, Virginia, and Alabama.
What a busy couple of weeks with IR! There are still more career fairs happening in the fall that you should attend. First is the CE Career Fair.
Civil Engineering Career Fair (Oct 9th in person) will be held at the CoRec from 9am to 3pm. The CE Career Fair already has their information sessions penciled in the night of October 8th in Hampton Hall. Please note they also have an interview day on Oct 10th this year. This is a new feature so I’m not sure how many companies will be conducting interviews on campus. Information will be updated here for the fair. This fair will mainly feature consulting firms and there will be many EEE alums present.
The Ag Fair is on October 7th at the CoRec from 10:00am-3:00pm. See who is attending here. Please note the Ag Fair is currently NOT on the career fair plus app. Anyone who makes something has an environmental need. I would think they have environmental internship opportunities also.
I know your time is limited, so I always recommend attending IR and the Civil Career Fair in the fall. Go to the Ag Fair if you have time or you have a specific interest in working for ag companies.
The CCO has resources that can help you in the job search. They can review your resume, give a mock interview, and offer workshops to aid you in the process of looking for employment. They also have information sessions listed that are scheduled through CCO. Check here for all CCO related events on campus: https://www.cco.purdue.edu/Calendar There is a reception on September 29ths for those interested in internships within the Indiana statehouse. There have been quite a few recent events and informational sessions with companies listed on the CCO calendar. Keep checking the CCO calendar for events as it is continually updated.
Did you know you can even practice your interview skills at the CCO? You can schedule a mock interview through them. This is a great way to practice your sales pitch! You can schedule a mock interview Monday to Friday during normal business hours here under “Undergraduates-Quick Chat-Peer Mock Interview”: https://www.cco.purdue.edu/Students/WhatWeOffer You can also do an interview via Big Interview virtually here.
Finally, if you are interested in graduate school, you should go to the Engineering Graduate Showcase (Sept 28th and 29th). You need to register, but it is free to attend. Your application fee to attend Purdue graduate school is waived if you go to this event. For those graduating soon, you don’t have to attend the entire event, please see the fee waiver link for details.

SEE Study Abroad
Interested in studying abroad? Here are the steps you should take:
Meet with the Purdue Study Abroad office FIRST! See how you can connect with them at https://www.purdue.edu/gpp/sa/about/appointment.html
Visit the Engineering Study Abroad Course Equivalency Database
Read the Studying Abroad in SEE page. This includes a link to the EEE Qualtrics info survey.
Complete the EEE Qualtrics info survey – it is required before meeting with your EEE advisor or EEE liaison. It was created to guide students through the basic study abroad resources prior to meeting with their advisor, with the hope that it helps students to be more aware of existing resources and empowers them long-term on how to find appropriate help. In addition, follow up meetings with the EEE advisor can now be less focused on the basics and more productive focusing on real needs and questions.
AFTER you’ve completed the survey, you can make an appt with Tammi or Maeve if you’d like to discuss how to optimize your plan of study to incorporate abroad courses.
Purdue Campus Sustainability Culture Assessment
As part of the Campus Sustainability Self-Study Project being led by Purdue University’s Institute for Sustainable Future, faculty, staff and grad students will be asked for feedback to enable the setting of benchmarks and guide future planning in areas related to campus sustainability. The “Purdue Campus Sustainability Culture Assessment" will be administered online from September 15 to September 26. The survey will not be sent to all emails, so we encourage you to participate by going to this link to take the survey.
