The Purdue University board of trustees on Thursday (Feb. 11) ratified the appointment of Timothy D. Sands as the university's next executive vice president for academic affairs and provost.

A recent New York Times article featured Jeffrey Youngblood, associate professor in the School of Materials Engineering at Purdue University, for his work in inventing a no-fog, self-cleaning coating for plastics and glass. The specially engineered polymers allow water to displace oil without the use of soap—an invention that's both convenient and environmentally friendly.

"Having sharply defined layers of materials enables you to improve and control the flow of electrons and to switch this flow on and off," said Eric Stach, an associate professor of materials engineering at Purdue.

Carbon nanotubes, which were discovered in the early 1990s, could make possible more powerful, compact and energy-efficient computers, as well as ultra-thin "nanowires" for electronic circuits. The nanotubes might be ideal for future electronics because they conduct electricity more efficiently than any other metal, but their practical application requires that they be manufactured to specific standards.

MSNBC (College of Engineering) -- Removing oily smudges from mirrors, countertops or fabrics usually requires some elbow grease ... and a strong soap or solvent. A new coating developed by Jeffrey Youngblood and colleagues at Purdue University promises that grease stains can be wiped away with plain old water.

Professor Jones, an advisee of Professors Bowman and Slamovich, is an assistant professor at the University of Florida since 2006 following postdoctoral research at the University of New South Wales, Australia and Iowa State University. His research on piezoelectric materials provided inspiration for current activities of the NSF Focused Research Group on Piezoelectrics lead by Professors Bowman, Garcia and Blendell
