MSE Graduate Student Awarded DHS Fellowship
MSE Graduate Student Awarded DHS Fellowship
The objectives of the DHS Scholarship and Fellowship Program are to continue education and research training in areas that support the DHS missions, increase familiarity with the research and technology areas of DHS, and to enhance research and develop technology in fields related to the DHS mission. Fellows are expected to strengthen U.S. scientific leadership in homeland security research and disseminate knowledge and technological advances in areas critical to achieving homeland security missions. After graduation, the Scholars and Fellows will have a greater understanding of the DHS mission and science and technology needs and be better prepared to support homeland security-affiliated science and technology organizations. The Department of Homeland Security has three primary missions: Prevent terrorist attacks within the United States, reduce America's vulnerability to terrorism, and minimize the damage from potential attacks and natural disasters.
DHS offers around eighty graduate fellowships every year. This fellowship provides Tom with three years of support to pursue a doctoral degree in Materials Engineering. Tom will also be able to participate in a summer internship at a national laboratory working on research related to homeland security. This education program is intended to ensure the establishment of a diverse and highly talented science and technology community to achieve the DHS mission and objectives.
