Magoon Awards

David Ewoldt, Nathan Smith, Suk Jun Kim, Francoise Angoua and Xu Nie have received the Magoon Teaching Awards for this year. This award recognizes outstanding teaching assistants and instructors through funds generated by a trust established by Estus H. and Vashti L. Magoon, who influenced the lives of many engineering educators early in their careers through this award. It is to recognize outstanding teaching assistants and instructors not only for their outstanding teaching abilities, but also for their dedication to the undergraduate students.

This honor is based entirely upon the recommendations of the students being taught.

Outstanding Graduate and Undergraduate Student Awards

Jessica VanDalen and Ben Iverson have been awarded the Outstanding Undergraduate and Graduate Awards, respectively. These awards recognize outstanding students who not only carry a high GPA but also become involved in several campus and off-campus organizations, donating their time to make better the lives of others. Ben Iverson’s research work is focused on texture in ferroelectric  ceramics; the investigation of a low-cost processing route to obtain  textured lead metaniobate ceramics with high piezoelectric  constants.   Ben has been a Teaching Assistant for MSE 235 and MSE 335 and is a member of numerous professional societies.

John Bray Award

The most prestigious award of the night is the John Bray Award. This highest award is named in honor of the founder of the Metallurgical Engineering program at Purdue, which eventually grew into the present-day School of Materials Engineering. This award normally goes to the highest academic achiever in the graduating class. This year the recipient of the Bray Award is John Koppes. Congratulations John!

John Deere Awards

Barbara Turk and Kyle Schaffer are this year's recipients of the John Deere Awards. These scholarshps are offered to two deserving students each year, one each to a sophomore and junior student who have expressed a particular interest in materials applications in industry. The scholarships are administered through Mr. Bruce Boardman, Manager, Metals Research, of Deere and Company. Mr. Boardman was a 1965 metallurgical engineering graduate of the School of Materials Engineering. Congratulations to these students for their achievements in Engineering.
