David DeWitt: Pioneer of Heat Transfer

Professor David DeWitt (1934-2005) came to Purdue University as a graduate student in the early 1960s. He became a professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue, teaching for more than 25 years. He is best known for co-authoring (with colleague Frank Incropera) Fundamentals of Heat and Mass Transfer, the definitive undergraduate textbook on the subject, now in its 8th edition and utilized worldwide. This weekend, his family returned to campus to pay tribute to Prof. DeWitt, establishing the Professor David P. DeWitt Heat Transfer Research Endowment.

The Technical Fellow designation recognizes employees who have a high level of functional expertise critical to the business and have achieved global recognition for their knowledge, publications, patents, and awards.

John Vellinger: From Chix in Space to a Company in Space

What do you say about someone who has had the same job since the 8th grade? As a student in the 1980s, John Vellinger (BSME '89) won a contest that sent chickens into space. He then utilized that experience to found a company called Techshot, which custom-builds experimental modules for the International Space Station.

Purdue Students Team Up with German Students to Study Refrigeration

Graduate students from Purdue University (USA) collaborated with students from the Technical University of Dresden (Germany) to complete an international course in refrigeration and compressors. They spent one week at the Technical University of Dresden, collaborated long-distance over the summer, and then convened for one week at Purdue's Herrick Labs to present their final projects.

Thomas Siegmund, Professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering, is the chair of the IUTAM Symposium on Architectured Materials Mechanics. The symposium will take place September 17 to 19, 2018 at the Gleacher Center of the University of Chicago, Illinois.
