Julia Badger: Designing the Future of Space Robots

Julia Badger (BSME '03) saw her hard work pay off with Robonaut, a sleek feat of humanoid technology that flew on the International Space Station. Today, as the Project Manager for the Robotics and Intelligence for Human Spacecraft Team at NASA's Johnson Space Center, she is designing the next generation of autonomous robots that will help humans explore the solar system.

These scholarships are awarded to outstanding undergraduate students in fields of aerospace engineering and space science, who tackle challenging questions in space research and exploration, particularly astrophysics and astronomy and engineering.

Insole provides healing for diabetic ulcers

Diabetes can lead to ulcers that patients don't even feel, and up to 24 percent of diabetics in the U.S. who experience them end up losing their toes, foot or leg. Purdue University researchers have developed a shoe insole that delivers targeted oxygen to help the healing process. Vaibhav Jain (MSME '17) helped to create the insole.

Earwig origami featured in National Geographic

Andres Arrieta's research was featured in National Geographic. He discovered that the earwig's wings use origami-like folds to expand to 10 times their size. This bistability allows its wings to expand with very little mechanical effort. At Herrick Labs, Andres is working to convert this bio-inspired origami into products that are useful to humans.
