Workforce education in manufacturing has traditionally been very low-tech: in-person teaching sessions, one-on-one apprenticeship, written manuals, and perhaps a video. But to keep pace with an increasing skills gap, some manufacturers are now turning to augmented and virtual reality to teach their workers new skills. A Purdue team has entered into a $5 million cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation (NSF) to create an augmented and virtual reality experience prototype called Skill-XR.

Bumsoo Han has created a microfluidic device to observe pancreatic cancer behavior over time, suggesting a new drug testing approach that could help scientists better catch resistance.

Cell culturing is a technique used by biologists to conduct research on tissue samples in the lab. Prof. Cagri Savran has successfully demonstrated 3D cell culturing originating from an individually selected cell, showing that it is possible to re-create a cancerous tumor that displays the same characteristics as the original tumor.

NASA has funded 31 new zero-gravity experiments, 5 of which are Purdue projects. Issam Mudawar plans to measure cryogenic two-phase heat transfer, to improve space-based propellant management.

The first and last people to walk on the Moon were Purdue engineers. The next humans to walk on the Moon will be wearing a spacesuit designed by Purdue engineer Amy Ross (BSME '94, MSME '96). She recently showcased the new xEMU spacesuit, which offers extended flexibility and protection for astronauts to explore the Moon as part of NASA's Artemis program.
