When she began her Ph.D. at Purdue in 2018, Susmita Sarkar had no idea of the ups and downs that were to come. But she turned every challenge into an opportunity, and has now become the first Purdue student to be selected for the Schmidt Science Fellows program.

A robot traveling at 2 millimeters per second doesn't sound particularly fast. But when that robot is the width of a human hair, it becomes record-breaking! Purdue University researchers created the speedy swimming robots using microscale 3D printing, enabling multi-material microrobots to be fabricated with hydrogel tails that adapt to their environment.

A team of Purdue mechanical engineering students have developed a novel system to deal with neuropathy, which causes patients to lose feeling in their feet, making them unable to walk. By attaching sensors to the shoe, connected wirelessly to a band around the leg, users can re-train their brain to "feel" the ground beneath them. The team won the Malott Innovation Awards, given to the best senior design project of the spring 2023 semester.

Alumni William and Barbara Rakosnik have committed more than $10 million to Purdue University in support of the School of Mechanical Engineering, the Department of Psychological Sciences and University Residences. The commitment will support graduate students and necessary services and programs in these areas.

Testing new designs for jet engine turbines is no easy task. Wind tunnels are large, complicated, and expensive; and building functional prototypes takes a long time. But Purdue University researchers now have an alternative: a water table which simulates supersonic flow, enabling them to quickly test and iterate their designs.
