IE Senior Casey Williams Elected National Chairperson of NSBE
After months of campaigning, Casey Williams has been elected to serve his term as National Chairperson of the National Society of Black Engineers.
This past month, Industrial Engineering student Casey Williams was elected as the National Chairperson of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). During several months of campaigning, connecting with members, and gathering feedback, Williams was able to demonstrate his vision for the NSBE and his readiness to lead. While serving for this community, Williams hopes to further the goals established by his platform: 'Elevate The Legacy. A.C.E. The Future', where A.C.E. represents Access, Connection, and Elevation.
“I want to ensure that every member has clear and equitable access to resources and pathways for growth,” says Williams. As National Chairperson, Williams has the capability to amplify the NSBE’s potential to serve future generations. Their mission is to “increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community”. By deepening connections across the organization, he plans to maximize NSBE impact on member experience and professional development. Strengthening the NSBE brand and furthering its evolution will create a long-term value for members, partners, and leaders alike.

The skillset needed to properly serve in this capacity requires a combination of leadership experience, strategic thinking, and an understanding of NSBE’s mission and operations. Additionally, having experience across different levels of the organization is crucial to developing the decision making capacity for immediate needs and long-term impact. Williams has personally served as an NSBE senator and membership chair in the past. These roles have prepared him to have the ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders. Strong communication, accountability, and empathy are also critical. As Chairperson, Williams is leading both people and initiatives, representing the voice of NSBE membership. The growth and responsibility he will gain as National Chairperson will undoubtedly be the same place he finds the most purpose and fulfillment.
Purdue Industrial Engineering has shaped Williams in the way he approaches both problems and leadership. Its emphasis on critical systems thinking, evaluating inefficiencies, and developing solutions design has created a mindset that directly translates to various aspects in the real world. For Williams, this was his leadership in the NSBE. As Chairperson, he will need to navigate complex organizational challenges. But IE has reinforced the importance of data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement, a tactic Williams will incorporate in his mission to further the excellence, success, and impact of the NSBE.
Engineering is not just about technical skills. Having an ability to lead and build relationships is what can set you apart, and is the very thing that set Williams apart in his election campaign. The NSBE community has demonstrated a confidence in his ability to lead, and a belief in the vision he shared. None of which would have happened if Williams had not taken advantage of the opportunities around him. But as a result of that initial step, Williams is able to connect with something much bigger than himself. He will serve the community that has supported him throughout his academic and professional career, and reciprocate that same support to members yet to come.
