Students nominated him with the following comments: "Dr. Pitts isrecognized for his outstanding adaptability. It is reflected in his approach to research where he adapts projects to align with students’ interests; in his strategy to develop students’ research abilities by not giving them the answers, but instead guiding them to solutions by asking questions; in his acknowledgment of the different career goals of students; and in his role as a mentor to various student organizations at Purdue University."

This award was created by the College of Engineering (CoE) to help graduate students recognize fantastic mentors for specific characteristics.
