Biography
Dr. Sharif obtained his PhD degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering with a focus on computational medical imaging and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 2010 supervised by Yoram Bresler, PhD. He also trained as an American Heart Association postdoctoral fellow (2010-2013) with Debiao Li, PhD, and Daniel S. Berman, MD, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, and UCLA. He has over a decade of research experience and a track record in translational cardiovascular imaging, computational imaging science, accelerated MRI, and machine learning innovations in medical imaging.
In late 2022, he was recruited to Indiana University School of Medicine as the Director of Cardiovascular MRI Research and an awardee of the Indiana Collaborative Initiative for Talent Enrichment (INCITE) program funded by the Lilly Endowment to attract top biomedical scientists to IU. Before joining IU, he held joint faculty appointments at Cedars-Sinai and UCLA Geffen School of Medicine and served as the Director of the NIH-funded Laboratory for Translational Imaging of Microcirculation.
In 2024, Dr. Sharif joined the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering as an associate professor.
Research Interests
- Development and clinical validation of innovative MRI technologies for quantitative imaging of the dynamics in the cardiovascular system
- Solving ongoing challenges in non-invasive testing of coronary microvascular health and imaging-guided evaluation of therapies targeting coronary microcirculation
- Development of "low field" MRI scanners which have a wider bore
- Expansion of application of cardiac MRI to a much wider cohort of patients
